Belle McWilliams Scholarship (College of Arts and Sciences)

In 1978 the Schultz family created an endowment to honor Belle McWilliams, who taught American History in Memphis Public Schools for 40 years. The Belle McWilliams scholarships, paid from this endowment, honor exemplary history majors who exhibit aptitude and interest in American history. The Department of History will award up to two Belle McWilliams scholarships per year, one reserved for students studying African-American history and one reserved for those studying general topics in American history. Applicants should have an overall GPA of 3.25 and have at least sophomore standing (31 credit hours). To demonstrate an academic focus in either African-American or general American history, applicants must include in their personal statement a list of completed or in-progress American history courses as well as a description of the topics and themes most intellectually appealing to the candidate. Award given to the applicant with best combination of GPA and essay.
