River City Partnership Sedgwick Scholars FY21 (College of Education)

Applicants must have applied and been accepted to the University of Memphis before being considered for this award. The award is available to firstƒ?time, full-time freshmen and is renewable for up to 4 years for students attending the University of Memphis campus in Memphis, TN. Renewal is contingent upon maintaining satisfactory academic progress and meeting the requirements of the River City Partnership. Additionally, applicants selected to move forward in the process will be contacted via the email in early February and invited to participate in an interview on the University of Memphis campus in late February and early March.

Note: This scholarship may be combined with other Universityƒ?wide academic scholarships, including Dean, Provost or Presidential scholarships, as well as the Tennessee HOPE Scholarship and external scholarships and grants.

Award Criteria
1. Admission to the University of Memphis as a first-time, full-time freshman.
2. Eligible applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative high school GPA and/or a 21 ACT score.
3. Two letters of recommendation from a school official (e.g., teacher, principal, school counselor, etc) and a community member (who is not a relative).
4. Eligible applicants must submit a 250-word essay that describes their interest in teaching in Shelby County Schools or Charter Schools in Memphis, TN. Applicants may
respond to one, or both, of the following questions:
Achievement School District. Applicants may respond to the following questions:
a. What or who inspires you to become a teacher in Shelby County Schools or Charter Schools in Memphis, TN?
b. How will you demonstrate that you are driven by excellence and committed to teaching in Shelby County Schools or affiliated Charter Schools in Memphis, TN?

Award: $2,500 per academic year ($10,000 over 4 years if renewed)
NOTE: Recipients of this award will automatically qualify to receive teh River City – Peak Scholarship for an additional $2,000 per year.
